Brookside Community Play runs an afterschool program on the east side of Indianapolis focused on helping kids overcome trauma through the power of play. Trauma is a daily experience for many of our kids whether through hunger, poverty, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. More than 80% live in poverty, over 21% have experienced abuse or neglect. Academic struggles include 41% of 3rd graders failing their IREAD-3 test prohibiting them to advance to 4th grade, and 13% of students in local elementary schools pass both English/Language Arts and Math portions of ISTEP.
Vision: Brookside Community Plays believes lives transform when you combine caring adult relationships through Coach-Mentors, connectedness with peers and sense of belonging by learning from one another and working together, and learning how the Gospel can transform their lives through Kingdom-minded character development.
Volunteers: Coach-Mentors are needed to work individually and in small group settings with children in K-6th grade. You'll participate in activities like basketball, robotics, theater, and cooking. Volunteers need to be available for at least one day per week throughout the entire session.
